History
The history of the Lebanon American Club began in l921 by a prominent group of Syrian and Lebanese gentlemen meeting in Basher’s Pool Hall. In l936, they purchased land on New Street and completed construction of the Club in l937. In l939, the Ladies joined ranks with the men and called themselves the “Charitable Ladies Society” under the leadership of Mrs. Chicory (Josephine) Buzaid.
She was mother of Judge Norman Buzaid. The membership included; LuLu Barbarie, Rose Haddad, Adele Farris, Hannah Asmar, Eva Kaback, Mamie Zarour, Esma Nimer Jowdy, Labeeby Ellis, Hala Shibley, Farfora Michael, Rose Abdella, and Alice Ferris. The annual dues were $3.
Today
The Club moved to its current home on West Street in l993. As of today, the Ladies have approximately 60 members called “The Lebanon American Club Ladies Auxiliary” who meet the third Tuesday of each month for ten months, from Sept. to June, under the direction of an Executive Board. The 2013 Board consists of a President, Ruth Ashkar, Vice President, Betty Najm, Secretary, Janet Coury, and the Treasurer, Debbie Sousa. The Ladies Aux. is strengthened with the help of Standing Committees: Publicity, Telephone, Hospitality, Program, Sunshine, By Laws, and Nominating. At the end of each meeting, members socialize enjoying dessert and sometimes dinners.
Recognitions
We would like to give recognition in memory of Past Presidents of the Aux. who served in the 80’s and 90’s to: Adele Farmer, Laurice Saffi, Lorraine Jowdy and Lila Shaker. Living Past Presidents are Beverly Ackel, Josephine Nassif, Mary Nahoum, Theresa Hanna, Nada Zarini and Betty Najm
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Ladies Aux. is to promote social functions, such as card parties, pot-luck fund-raiser dinners in the Spring and Fall, to foster civic and humanitarian activities within the community and to sponsor activities to aid in the financial needs of the club, mainly scholarships. The scholarships are for members’ children or grandchildren that are graduating Seniors from high school accepted and enrolled in a 4 year college. Over the years, the ladies socialized by taking trips to New York/Westchester shows, the Culinary Institute of America for lunch and a tour of The Franklin D. Roosevelt Home, Presidential Library & Museum and casinos traveling by bus and having a relaxing day. The Ladies were invited by the Men to attend baseball games at Yankee Stadium and a dinner cruise around Manhattan. They are proud to be able to donate from their treasury to charitable organizations. Some of the charitable organizations that we have helped are the Hospice Breakfast which is held annually in May at the Amber Room, Dorothy Day, new Covenant House at CCOM, and to orphanages in Lebanon which also houses women in need. There are many other organizations in the Greater Danbury Area that the ladies have helped either by donations of food or monies.
Membership
To become a member, the ladies should be of middle-eastern decent, or their husbands are of middle-eastern decent who are members or non-members of the Lebanon American Club. If eligible, and interested, please contact the current Ladies Auxiliary President Ruth Ashkar
Special Events
